Senior Adult Ministry (SAM)

Senior Adult Ministry (SAM) is designed for people aged fifty-five and over. SAM has monthly potlucks September through the following May. One of our mission outreach activities is a partnership SAM has with Second Harvest Food Bank. We also offer a series of hikes in the spring and fall that are very popular. In addition, we also have opportunities to remember SAM members at home in June and December.

The fellowship in the SAM Family is something to partake in. Become a part of the family!

Seventh Annual Virtual Pie Sale - November 1 - 30

November is an incredibly special time of the year for Senior Adult Ministry (SAM) and for that matter, Messiah as a whole.

Our primary recipient is Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB). We will also send a donation to our brothers and sisters at Christ the Shepherd Church ELCA in Altadena, California. They went through that horrible fire earlier this year. We do not want to forget them just because the fire is out.

The food bank presently distributes to over three hundred food pantries in sixteen south central Wisconsin counties.

When you to donate to the virtual pie sale, your gift will be multiplied FOUR times! Please note…not one penny stays at the church—it all goes to SHFB and Christ the Shepherd Church ELCA.

How do you “buy” a virtual pie? It is quite easy. You can go online to messiahchurch.com and click on “Giving.” Then use the drop-down menu and select “Virtual Pies.” You may also write a check to Messiah Lutheran Church and in the memo line, write “SAM Virtual Pies.” Place your check in an envelope and mark the front of the envelope “SAM—Keith.” Do NOT leave a pie envelope in the offering plate as your donation can easily get misdirected.

The last day of the virtual pie sale is Sunday, November 30th.

Thank you for making an impact on food insecurity in southern Wisconsin.

Senior Adult Ministry Hikes

Friday, October 31 – Owen Conservation Park, 6021 Old Sauk Rd., Madison, WI 53705

10 AM departure time

This park on Madison’s west side has both wooded and prairie trails. We’ll do a wooded loop (and maybe spot deer and turkeys) before we head down the hill onto a trail that encircles a large prairie.

It is about two miles with some hilly areas, but we’ll take it slowly, and there are benches along the way.

Meet in the parking lot, where restrooms are available.

Monday, November 10 - McCarthy Park, 4841 Co Hwy TT, Cottage Grove, WI 53527

10 AM departure time

This is a favorite 2.5 mile walk in woods and along fields with open views and gentle hilled areas.

Note: there are non-flush comfort stations in the parking lot where we will meet for the hike.

Directions from Messiah: Go left on Cottage Grove Road past Metro Market and turn left at the light on Sprecher Road. Continue through the
Milwaukee St. intersection then turn right at the next intersection onto County Rt T. Continue straight when it becomes CO Rt TT. Proceed through the traffic circle and stay on TT.

The park entrance is about a half mile ahead on your left. To see the route mapped out, go here:

A GPS might try to put you on Pierceville Road, but that will take you past the park entrance and out of the way.

SAM Pot Lucks

On Wednesday, November 19, we will return to our normal time of 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm. Our featured speaker from the University of Wisconsin will address how new and emerging technology in robotics and AI will change the healthcare experience for patients, and the work being done to bring it to all areas of Wisconsin.

Then join your fellow SAMies for the Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 17. We will have a catered meal and enjoy the holiday music of the Monroe Brass Quintet.
